Jessica & Dave – St. Francis Wedding and Waldorf Hotel Vancouver

Jessica was one of my first brides to book for 2010 and one of my last weddings to cover this year. Back almost a year ago we hit it off immediately on the phone and she wanted to book me on the spot. I love when I can connect with a couple over art and photography. It didn’t hurt that she was so excited about my photos and that she was taking art and photography classes at Emily Carr.

Jessica’s family is, to put it simply, awesome. They’re the owners of the classic Waldorf Hotel on Hastings Street in Vancouver… (more about that later!)

Our day started very early with Jess and her girls getting ready at the Ice Salon on Burrard. The stylist did such a spectacular job on her hair; she looked straight out of 1920′s Hollywood:

They continued getting ready at the Fairmont:

This is the first time Jessica’s dad saw her in the dress…

The ceremony was held at the beautiful St. Francis of Assisi where the weather continued to improve for us by the minute. By the end, sun was shining bright and gave us the rest of the day without any rain. Thanks to my second shooter, Geno DellaMattia, for this excellent shot:

I love this image; it has a glowing bride, a proud father, and family in the background so happy they’re almost crying.

We took a few moments for bridal portraits outside… GORGEOUS! Isn’t she the most beautiful bride?

The reception was held at her family’s hotel, the Waldorf on Hastings Street. It is such a spectacular place, almost frozen in time — and that time is 1950′s Luau style!

Jessica and her dad have such a special connection. This is a quick location portrait of them in the Waldorf kitchen where she worked as a teenager:

Thanks for letting me be a part of your day, Jessica & Dave!

Welcome Malcolm :: Birth Photographer Vancouver

Welcome, baby Malcolm!

Mom Jozi’s friends arranged for me to be present at this most amazing event. Jozi is also a photographer in Vancouver so I am especially honoured to provide the photos of her second son’s birth. We started on Friday night a few hours after the induction in St. Paul’s Hospital’s maternity ward. Jozi was surrounded by family and friends the entire time.

I returned the next day when the action picked up…

Granville Island Engagement with Tara & Richard

I met Tara and Richard at Granville Island on a beautiful August day. The forecast called for rain but as we all know, you can’t trust a Vancouver weather forecast any further than an hour or two out. From a dismal, cloudy morning, we got a bright, hazy, sunny fall day.

Tara and Richard were awesome to work with; so easy-going and photogenic!

I asked them how they met and they replied they were “set up” in 11th grade — nine years ago! These two, so obviously in love, will be married in the Summer of 2011, after ten years of being together.

And they said they couldn’t make it as models! Check out this Blue Steel…

Furry Creek Wedding with Heather & Ewan

If you haven’t heard of Furry Creek, you aren’t alone. Heather & Ewan invited family and friends to join them at the beautiful Furry Creek Golf & Country Club an hour north of Vancouver on the way to Whistler. It was an absolutely gorgeous location on a very overcast day. I’ll probably mention the venue a few more times in this post as it was truly one of the best. Their event coordinator, Jill Weekes, was on top of everything and kept everyone on-time, and even better… the food was out of this world!

What an amazing setting for Heather & Ewan to get married…

My second photographer, Geno DellaMatia was hanging with Ewan and captured these images:

Meanwhile, Heather and the ladies were getting ready nearby.

Two adorable little flower girls were raring to go before the ceremony!

But only one made it down the aisle…

And the other didn’t quite make it all the way down once she saw mom on the side!

The ceremony was scheduled to be an outdoor event on one of Furry Creek’s many scenic overlooks; unfortunately the weather drove us indoors but there was still a lot of beautiful natural light in the room and and equal amount of love.

We headed out in some insanely-powered golf carts to tour the sights and the beaches nearby.

I love this one; thanks to Geno for making the image while having to carry gear and umbrellas!

Big thanks to the fashion photographer who saw us getting wet and offered to leave his temporary shelter on the beach for us to use when he was done! This one gave us a nice break from the constant rain.

Now I’ve seen a fair number of wedding cakes done by friends and family and I’ve seen some really high-quality ones lately, too, but this one takes the cake. (Wow, that was bad, wasn’t it?) The uncle who made this happens to be a culinary instructor so you certainly can see the professionalism here and attention to detail.

The catering and deserts provided by the Furry Creek Country Club were quite easily the best I’ve seen (and tasted) all year.

The first dance…

Baby Mira :: Newborn Photographer in Vancouver

Mira’s mum met me while I was toting my gear through the St. Paul’s maternity ward after doing a session with another family. I was happy to come back just a few days later and meet this little bundle!

Freda & Toni & Fireworks on a Boat :: Wedding Photography in Vancouver

I was looking forward to Freda & Toni’s wedding all year. After shooting their engagement session at English Bay, it was easy to see that these two were truly in love… and they planned to celebrate that love by getting married on a boat under the Celebration of Light fireworks!

Earlier in the day, these two were surrounded by a wealth of family and friends on the top deck of the Queen of Diamonds as they said their vows overlooking False Creek.

Even better than the ‘first kiss’ shot, for me, is the ‘first hug’ — so much love!

In-Hospital Newborn Baby Orest :: Vancouver Birth Photography

I was delighted to be called in to St. Paul’s Maternity in Vancouver to see little baby Orest today. His mum is the doctor who delivered my son and we did her new baby’s portraits in the exact same room. It was really lovely to revisit that room where my wife and I spent over a week and now meet with this brand new family, still tired from the birth, but so happy to be together.

Here is Orest, just two days old, skin-to-skin with dad…

We checked out of the hospital and went over to Nelson Park for a few images in the grass.

And here is Orest with mum.

Christina & Phillip :: Granville Island, UBC Vancouver Wedding

The sun has finally returned to Vancouver and last week it made for a beautiful Saturday for Christina and Phillip to get married. The day began at the Chapel of the Epiphany at the University of British Columbia and ended at Hy’s Steakhouse, downtown Vancouver. In between we had good time exploring Granville Island as these two were up for anything.

This is Phillip as he and his crew waited to walk up to the altar.

These two were really up for anything. At this point, I suggested that we jump the railing (a crazy idea, really) so I could get a shot of them under the rocks. Christina instantly replied, “OK!”

And it was only after we took off that they mentioned Phillip wasn’t that fond of boats or the water. You could never tell…

Rena & Matthew :: Cypress Creek Wedding, Vancouver

What a beautiful day we had with Rena and Matthew covering their wedding on Cypress Creek! I knew we’d get along famously from our first meeting. Matthew and I talked shoes and tailors and we hit it off; he went to Northampton to get his Grensons and to Modernize Tailors in Vancouver for his gorgeous bespoke suit. Rena looked amazing in a pewter dress and handmade jewelry by one of her bridesmaids.

As Rena was getting ready in her hotel room on Lonsdale Quay, she showed me why this spot was special to her. Even though she grew up in Burnaby, she revealed that when she would skip school, she would take transit all the way over to the Quay where she would waste the day away hanging out on the dock… the dock right below the hotel room where she was getting ready today!

One of the gifts the couple asked for was an acoustic guitar. Rena’s uncle presented them with a beautiful instrument and a Bryan Adams song…

English Bay with Freda & Toni :: Vancouver Engagement

I planned to meet Freda and Toni at English Bay around 6:30 in the evening… little did we know that we picked what was probably the busiest day of the year on the beach so far. It was the first true day of Summer with a ton of great light, a warming heat in the sun, and a cool breeze in the shade. Other than having to dodge a few thousand people on the shore, it was a perfect atmosphere for a relaxed engagement session!

Freda and Toni looked so genuinely happy together; it was impossible to catch a moment where they weren’t smiling or laughing or kissing.

I am certainly looking forward to their wedding in a few weeks where we’ll be on a boat cruising False Creek during the Celebration of Light fireworks!
